Why Choose a Red Shag Rug

A red shag rug can be a great style statement in a living room, a TV room or even in a bedroom. Shag rugs get their unique name for their typical “shaggy” look, created with long piles of material. When a typical rug is made, loops are created out of the material and the leftover material is then sheared off. When producing shag rugs, the excess material is not sheared away and long pieces of the material are left on instead. This makes the rugs look fluffy and soft.

Materials used for making these popular rugs include angora, wool, cotton and other natural materials – sometimes even leather – but also nylon and other synthetic materials. The variety of fabrics and fibers are used to create these rugs in a range of sizes, shapes and colors. Because red is one of the most vibrant colors you can choose, red shag rugs can easily become a centerpiece in any room of the house.

Keeping these fluffy rugs clean is slightly more complicated compared to cleaning normal area rugs. Most of the time they can be vacuum cleaned, but an upright vacuum cleaner should not be used, because it can tear out the extra long pieces of fibers. Leather should always be taken to the dry cleaner, whereas woolen rugs are generally the easiest to keep clean. Your choice of material should then depend on how much the rug is going to be used. For the busiest room in the house, or for the kids’ room, it is better to choose the easy-to-maintain wool, and leather rugs are best saved for places where they are not likely to get stained or damaged easily. You can breakup the theme and design by adding something like a southwestern area rug or an accent rug to create a different feel for a part of the room, or to a separate room.

Although they have been used for decades, shag rugs have recently become popular again and are a stylish and comfortable addition to any room.
