When looking up skincare articles you may come across some that mention Vitamin C. They may mention how it can help the skin of acne sufferers. They may even suggest a few foods that you can get the nutrient from. What most articles don’t mention is the “how” or “why” Vitamin C can help our skin.

Vitamin C is a vital nutrient that our bodies need. We get this nutrient through various vegetables and fruits but because we cannot produce our own Vitamin C or store it up for very long we must have a regular dose of the vitamin. Scurvy is the result of a severe Vitamin C deficiency and if not treated will result in death. Other symptoms of deficiency are: bleeding gums, split ends, gingivitis, weakened enamel, more susceptible to disease, and Anemia.

The way this vitamin helps our body is by strengthening our immune system and working as an antioxidant. We have a better chance of fending off disease and toxins in our bodies when we have ample Vitamin C nutrients in our system. It also helps to protect cells from premature aging and damage. Vitamin C also helps the body make collagen, the building block of tissue. Collagen is what creates tissue, ligaments, cartilage, and tendons.

Now we can start to see how Vitamin C can help our skin and signs of breakouts. By producing collagen it helps to heal and repair the skin when breakouts occur. It can help heal wounds that are created by severe acne and create new skin cells to keep the skin looking fresh and vibrant. Vitamin C also helps to fight infection from wounds and will keep the lesions caused by blemishes from becoming infected.

The biggest factor of Vitamin C in helping our beautiful skin is to maintain the tissue in our body, skin included. With adequate amounts of the nutrient in our diet we can enjoy healthy skin as well as a healthy immune system. Typically a one-a-day vitamin supplement will be sufficient but you may want to ask your doctor to be on the safe side.
