Fishing is a pastime that has been passed down from parents to children throughout generations. The bonding experience of a camping / fishing trip is second to none, especially since you are passing on not only a fun past time but also a useful one. The problem sometimes comes in at the cost. Between rods, reels, licenses, and tackle, fishing can be one of the most expensive outdoor adventures. There is a way, however, to put a few extra dollars back in your pocket and still get the fishing gear you want.
Used fishing tackle is available on line and at many sports and bait shops. Most products you need you can find online through simple internet search and it will save you a boat load of cash. Whether gearing up for the first time or just for a new season, tackle can be pricey. Some lures can cost upwards of $20 each. Most online fishing stores as well as bait shops will sell high quality used lures at a fraction of the cost of new. Make sure to inspect them for any nicks or rust and rule out any that are excessive damaged.
Saving money on poles and reels is an entirely different bird all together. Used rods and reels need to be properly inspected to make sure they are functioning properly. Children need different lengths and flexibility in their rods, and reels need to be ones that they can easily cast and reel in, without getting backlashes. In this case online stores are pretty much not an option unless you have the time and an option to return any that are not going to work for you. Your best bet is to go to your local bait shop or sporting goods store and inspect the product and ask if you can test it out. Most bait shops are on or near the water and will be more than happy for you to sample their equipment before purchasing. Often times sporting goods stores will let you try out poles and reels in the parking lot outside, and this is a way to get some idea of how well it works and fits the person that will be using it. The nice thing about this is that the shop owner can also point you in the right direction for what type of equipment you need for what you are fishing for.
Whether it’s a little hobby of yours or fishing is a big passion go out and enjoy the sport. Keep in mind that you don’t need to dump a month’s salary into getting geared up. Look for used tackle online and at your local bait and tackle shop to get good quality equipment at a fraction of the cost.
