While it’s true that metal just isn’t as warm looking and feeling as wood, there are a lot of advantages to metal beds that make them a good choice for some people. Assuming you buy a metal frame bed of decent quality, you can expect more durability and ease of maintenance from a metal bed than from a wooden bed of a comparable price. That’s because metal will not warp or crack, nor are joints likely to fail if they’re well joined. For a wooden bed that is as durable as a metal one, you will probably pay more for joinery that was designed to last for a long time. The mass-produced wooden beds that you see in most places tend to be cheaply made and quality can be very spotty.
For rambunctious kids who might easily break a flimsy bed, a single metal bed or metal bunk beds can be a smart choice. With a quality metal bed for kids, you don’t have to worry about having a piece of wood snapping or the bed coming apart, and the same bed can be used for several kids if you have the need.
Another of the big pluses of metal beds is that they don’t mold. Although some people are lucky enough to scratch their heads at this and say that their wood beds have never grown mold, those of us living in warmer, humid regions can understand the headache, not to mention the health hazard, of having mold grown on furniture. It’s yucky and a pain to clean, plus it can easily come back even if the house is reasonably well ventilated. A metal bed lets you avoid mold on your bed entirely, saving you the painstaking cleaning effort.
Besides not having to clean mold, a metal bed is just easier to clean, period. You don’t have to use wood polish or even a metal polish for most of the metal frame beds on the market, and usually just a quick wipe down will do.
