The Appeal of Vintage Christmas Collectibles

Whether they celebrate the holiday or not, vintage Christmas decorations are uniquely appealing to almost everybody. Anyone who has attended many garage sales or estate sales knows that they are frequently found at such events. It often happens that a family’s parents will accumulate a substantial collection of Christmas decor and use it year after year, even as they become grand parents or even great grand parents.

In the meantime, their children go out into the world and start families of their own. As their children grow, they in their turn begin to accumulate a collection of Christmas decorations that develop a history, and no Christmas would be complete for their children without the familiar icons with which they’ve grown up.

In the end, the grand parents or great grand parents downsize or pass on, and their collection of vintage Christmas decorations is removed from the attic and put out for sale. For those who wish to start their own Christmas traditions, such sales can be a treasure trove of history with which to get a jump start.

If you don’t mind a noticeable bump in your electric bill for a few weeks or so, the big, old style Christmas light bulbs just can’t be beat for creating a bright glow and warm feeling. They can often be found by the bagful for a couple of dollars. The savings on the bulb strings can make up for some inflation of the electric bill.

Vintage Christmas tree balls can also be found at low prices. The older balls are heavier, and often have frosted on scenes of Christmas or words of cheer. Such bulbs can be found new in stores, but you won’t find them at any lower price than you will at a garage sale.

Christmas wreaths can be an exceptional find at a garage or estate sale. Often hand crafted versions come on the market that reek of history! Those designed for indoor use are most often in quite good condition, and can be had for pennies on the dollar compared to their modern counterparts.

If you are seeking to start your own tradition of holiday decorating, don’t miss the opportunity that awaits you on Saturday mornings.
