Selection of drill bits

A drill bit is a cutting tool that is made to fit any generic rotating drill. These drills, when hooked to a drill bit, are used to cut holes of varying sizes into a wide variety of materials. The two terms, drill and bit, can be confusing sometimes as they describe the cutter holder (the drill) and the cutting piece (the drill bit).

Bits can often be found as a package deal with a drill. Often times a set for a house will include general purpose drill bits, mainly for use on wood. There are three different types of drill bits that are often used on wood, these are flat, dowel and the auger drill bit. A flat drill bit is often sharp with a point or sometimes a screw that’s in the center of the bit to get through tougher wood. A dowel bit features some cutting spurs as well as a sharp point in the middle, which is ideal for drilling into a wooden dowel, since it is made to leave smooth edges. The last type of drill bit is known as an “auger drill bit”. This bit has a type of corkscrew bit or twisted shape complete with a nice broad cutting edge. This produces smooth and accurate cuts into wood. Twisted bits are possibly the most common types of bits available. These bits can also make small holes and wood. Another most common types of drill bits are the step drill bits.

These bits are available in any hardware store and come in a myriad of shapes, sizes and types. The two main types of drill bits are carbide-tipped bits and steel bits. Steel bits are usually a little bit less expensive, but in this case you do get what you pay for. Make sure when purchasing the drill bits to find the type and size that will get the job done correctly. To sharpen the drill bit you should also buy the drill bit sharpener.
