Running Shoes Can Be Divided Into Three Categories

Running shoes have been developed over the years to offer the runners who wear them as much support and comfort as possible. Running shoe manufacturers have tried to cover the various needs of runners by dividing the types of shoes into three main categories, namely Motion Control, Stability and Cushioning. As the range of each brand continues to expand the lines between each category type has become a little blurred and companies have begun to rename their shoe types to cross into new categories.

Each of the categories aims at providing something different to runners. The following is a brief breakdown of what each shoe category means as well as a few brands and models available.

The largest category of shoes is the stability category. The shoes in this category are designed to offer the runner a little bit of support for slight overpronation as well as cushioning that is needed by all runners. The majority of runners will find shoes suitable to their running style from this category. Shoes from this category include: Brooks Inifiniti, Saucony Progrid Omni, Nike Zoom Elite+, Asics GT 2150, Adidas Supernova Sequence.

The smallest group of runners are those who severely overpronate with all kinds of stresses placed on their joints and tendons by the movement of their feet and ankles as they strike the ground. Shoes in the Motion Control, or maximum stability, category offer a great deal of protection and support to those who wear the shoes from this category. Shoes include: Brooks Addiction, Saucony ProGrid Stabil CS, Asics Gel Fortitude, New balance 587 and Nike Zoom Equation+.

The final category is for those whose feet perform in almost exactly the opposite way to those who need shoes from the Motion Control category. Underpronators tend to hit the ground very hard generating a great amount of shock that is not properly absorbed by the natural movement of the foot. These runners require shoes from the Cushioning category as a means of getting the extra shock absorption that they lack. Shoes from this category include: Asics Gel Nimbus, Brooks Glycerin, Mizuno Creation, Adidas Response Cushion, Saucony ProGrid Jazz, Mizuno Wave Rider.

As mentioned earlier, the lines are beginning to blur with these categories and some shoes that are listed in the Cushioning category may also exhibit stability features and vice versa. The main thing is to find a shoe within the category you need that provides you with the comfort to run as often as your training dictates without becoming injured.
