Misting Systems Provide Major Agricultural Benefits

The use of outdoor misting systems has become popular for residential use with systems being installed around patios and in backyards to turn an otherwise hot environment into an area where it is cool and pleasant. This type of technology has been in use in many applications for years, one of which is in the agricultural field to increase the yields for farmers with livestock.

The application of this kind of misting system has followed studies that have shown that animals that are kept in comfortably cool conditions will continue to put on weight while animals under heat stress will lose weight. When the aim of the farmer is to produce healthy animals in order to sell them at market, it is easy to see why it is desirable to create conditions that are as comfortable as possible.

The misting system looks like a heavy duty fan with a water hose attached to it. Water is pumped through the pipes and out through misting nozzles that are located in front of the spinning blades of the fan. The water droplets that are produced are tiny, measuring only around 20 microns in size and as they are hit by the air from the fan a process known as flash evaporation takes place. It is this process that enables the significant cooling effect.

It is not only animals used for meat production where benefits are experienced. Dairy cattle also must be kept cool because it has been found that cooler cows produce more milk than cows that are under a little bit of heat stress. This is a fact that has been known for years and it was common for the cows to be watered down while they were waiting to be milked. A continually wet milking shed does not create a healthy environment so the introduction of a misting system means that the cooling effect can be delivered without wetting the surrounding area.

Being able to control a certain part of the climate at a relatively small cost is an important step for farmers looking to make a profit. An outdoor misting system can be operated using only a small amount of water but delivering a major benefit, and think of the affect on the air around that hot patio or porch during hot summer days.
