Whether you are trying to save money or simply avoid harmful preservatives, making hummus at home is a great idea. Not only can you make a much healthier dish for less, it will also taste much better than hummus that you would buy in the store. Although making hummus at home is easy, here are a few things to keep in mind to help you create the best hummus recipe.
Start with Warm Chick Peas!
If you simply start with canned chick peas, you are really missing out! One of the keys to perfect hummus is cooking your own chick peas and using the warm beans to start your hummus. The heat works to help the flavors combine and reduce the acidity of the garlic. For perfect texture add in a teaspoon of baking soda to the beans in the last hour of cooking.
Use Add- ins to Add Variety!
Hummus is great without adding anything else to it, but there are so many different ways to really jazz it up. You can add fresh herbs like parsley or cilantro. You can also toss in chopped olives, sun-dried tomatoes or roasted red peppers. If you like spicy food try adding cayenne pepper, garlic and smoked paprika. The options are endless!
Add Za’atar
Za’atar is a Middle Eastern blend of dry herbs that is absolutely fabulous sprinkled over hummus. It really adds that special finishing touch. Simply combine ¼ cups of sesame seeds with 4 teaspoons of thyme, one teaspoon of garlic powder and ½ a teaspoon of salt. You can store it in an air tight container and use it for hummus, pizza or to add to olive oil as a bread dip.
Make it a Meal
If you really want to go out, you can turn hummus into a complete meal. To keep things healthy, try making a quinoa tabbouleh and serving it with warm whole wheat pita bread. It is also great served with chopped tomatoes and olives.
