For several decades, the most recognized method for facing a hair loss problem was to wear a mens hair piece or toupee. These were very popular during the early part of the twentieth century. As a matter of fact, men have been utilizing these as cover ups for hair loss for many centuries. Are you familiar with the early English and American politicians who wore the big powdered wigs wherever they went? They knew that they looked more commanding and daunting with these wigs than showing that they had a bald head. Julius Caesar also had to hide his balding crown with fig leaves according to some stories.
Using hair pieces turned into a bum wrap during the middle part of 1900s when they were used as source of comic relief in comedy movies. Remember a movie where the actor is eating his hot soup and suddenly his toupee falls off or it flips up when there is strong wind. The perception about a toupee got so bad because for a movie to be funny meant there should be a shameful scene about it. The great thing is that most of the drawbacks of hair pieces have been resolved and it’s worth knowing what they can actually offer now.
Today, they are more widely known as hair replacement systems and the devices look almost natural and can stand strong winds. The biggest concern in early days was that the hair piece couldn’t be kept in place. The reason was most toupees back then were only held by a rubber band. Usually, the band would slip and the toupee would then fall off. The hair replacement system has totally evolved and it now functions like most users have long dreamed of. Strong adhesives are used today to keep it in place and are very effective. You can even wear it while swimming without worrying that it’s going to float away.
Another complaint about earlier toupees was how the hair roots of the fake hair didn’t appear natural. This was the outcome because the hair shafts were tied individually to the base material so the knot became visible. At present, the hair is individually injected into a rubber-like base material so the hair piece looks very natural even at close inspection.
