The flow and water pressure is regulated via a plastic fitting referred as a stem. If the faucet is a single handled unit, then only one stem functions for the regulation of water pressure. Decreasing or increasing the flow of either lines cause the regulation of the temperature and pressure of the water coming out of the faucet.
If the tub faucet is hooked to an overhead shower, then a reversal of water flow occurs. Once the water faucet is turned into the direction that favors the flow of water from the showerhead, then the valve directs the water to the shower pipe instead of allowing it to come out of the mixer. With the aid of pressure, the water is pushed up into the pipe and out of the shower head.
