Historically, a fireplace is an architectural structure that contains fire for cooking. Ancient fire pits were sometimes built on the ground at the center of the house or dwelling. Later it was used for heating the home especially during the cold season.

There is wide range of accessories used with fireplaces which vary between countries, regions and historical periods. For the interior, common in modern Western cultures are fireguards, grates, fireplace surround, pellet baskets, andirons and fire dogs. All of these hold fuel and accelerate burning. Sometimes heavy metal firebacks are used to radiate heat, to protect the back of the fireplace and as a decoration.

For the past several decades tubular grate heaters have become an increasingly popular when it comes to fireplace accessories. This accessory significantly increases the efficiency of a fireplace, thus increasing the amount of heat that comes from the fireplace and out into the home.

The grate heaters work by having naturally convected or fan-forced tubular metal heat exchanger that is heated by the coals and or fire. Fireplace accessories like the grate heaters draw in cold air from the floor and blow heated air back out into your home. This adds an element of conductive and convective heating which is typical of a basic fireplace.

For fireplace tending, the most common fireplace accessories are fireplace tools. These include tongs, pokers, shovels, bellows, brushes and tool stands. The fireplace accessories can be bought individually or by fireplace tool set.

The most common tools used are the tongs, which is used to lift the burning wood. The poker is used to move the logs to let the air in so that the wood will burn better. And the brush and shovel are very useful for quick cleanups of the fireplace. Each tool has a specific use and it is an advantage if you can acquire a set of these tools.
