Amber is fossilised tree resin  mostly produced by ancient conifers that can be dated back to about 40/50 million years ago. Amber quality and look varies according to its age, location and obviously the species of  tree, amber can be found in many parts of the world. There are two main varieties of amber: Baltic amber which can be found in the area around the Baltic states and Russia,  and Dominican amber which originates from the Dominican Republic. While the former has often the classic amber color, yellow or orange the latter has also the two rare sub-varieties of blue and red amber.

Blue amber, which looks quite ordinary when you look at it,  is only blue when placed under the sunlight.   Baltic amber is also more malleable and can be carved or moulded,  you will be  able to find very intricate amber jewelry and small objectsmade with it. While Baltic amber tends to be fairly opaque, Dominican amber can be quite clear and it is not unusual to find an insect or flower inside a piece of amber, which might be then worn as a pendant. Amber was also used in  medicinal potions and balms and the Ancient Egyptians believed that amber had the power to protect the dead  and that is why  amber amulets were left in tombs. Wearing amber bracelets and amulets was  also said  to relieve people of  arthritis,  headaches and many more medical conditions. Even now you will find amber teething necklaces said to relieve babies of any teething discomfort.

Whether you believe in its magical and medicinal powers or not, amber can be appreciated in jewelry, it will look particularly good when set in silver which provides a good contrast to its yellow/orange tones. You can choose between amber earrings, necklaces, pendants or brooches as it is a soft material is not always the best choice for rings which might get damaged easily. Be careful of fake amber and always use a reputable source when purchasing.
