Camp Chairs: What You Should Know Before You Buy

I’m an avid camper and I have been for years. Without question, one of the best purchases I’ve made recently as far as camping gear goes is my camp chair. It’s lightweight, small, easily portable, and it doesn’t take up too much room in my pack. Best of all, I get to sit some place comfortable when I’m at the campsite instead of having to try and find a comfortable looking spot on the ground. So if you’re in the market for a couple of camping chairs, what should you know before you purchase them?

The first and most important thing to know is that you should definitely buy your chairs from a reputable manufacturer. Coleman is probably the best known maker of these chairs, and a Coleman camp chair is never a bad thing to get. Kelsyus and Mountaineer are also good companies to buy chairs from. You might pay a bit more for a quality chair from one of these companies, but it will be worth it when you get your chair.

The next thing to consider is what sort of chair you want. If you want just the basic, no frills camp chair, you’re probably looking at spending 20 to 30 bucks. On the other hand, if you want a chair that reclines, or that has a canopy (to keep the sun off) or a footrest, you can easily spend $50 or more. It all comes down to personal choice, and of course your particular needs. One word of caution: if you do a lot of backpacking, make sure to get a lightweight camp chair. Some of the larger, more heavy duty camp chairs can weight up to 10 pounds, which is much too heavy for a long hike. Get a lightweight chair or a camp stool. Most of these only weight about 1 pound or so.
