Avoid Blood Sugar Spikes

Blood sugar spikes are one of a diabetic’s most important concerns. As time passes, elevated blood sugar levels can result in severe damage to any of the organs and functions of the body. Diabetes can potentially affect not only the heart and blood vessels, but also the nerves and the eyes. Even if your diet is perfect, eating too much food, or making the wrong food choices can result in blood sugar spikes. A diabetic obviously needs to be very aware of food choices and portions, but does not have to worry that sweets are gone forever. The objective is to try to work about 30 to 50 grams of carbohydrates into each meal, most of which must come from fresh, fiber-rich vegetables. 100 or so grams of carbohydrates per day should be plenty. Most of these carbohydrates should come from low-glycemic sources, and they should be consumed evenly throughout the day.

Eating too many carbohydrates at one time, or consuming high-glycemic foods like flour and potatoes, in too large a quantity,  can result in a blood sugar spike. The glycemic index rates foods based on how much they affect blood sugar level when eaten, with 0 being no change and 100 being a very strong change. High glycemic foods can cause blood sugar spikes because the body metabolizes them quickly and it is easy to miscalculate the amount your body needs at a given time. When a food is considered to be high-glycemic, such as potatoes, the glucose can enter your bloodstream within an hour. On the other hand, low-GI foods can take two hours or more for your body to make use of their carbohydrates.

Blood sugar spikes with chronic diabetes, can contribute to many different complications. One is retinopathy, which is a complication that affects the blood vessels in the retina of the eye, and, if left untreated, can  lead to blindness. Diabetic Nephropathy, is a kidney disorder that can cause kidney failure and may eventually require dialysis or a kidney transplant. There is also a strong correlation between diabetes and heart disease, so proper blood sugar control is vital to maintaining ideal health.

Neuroapthy is a gradual loss of feeling, because of nerve damage, in some parts of the body,  which usually affects the feet. This nerve damage results in numbness, so the diabetic person can no longer feel pain, injuries, or other damage to the feet, and resulting infections may progress before being noticed. In extreme cases, this may end up resulting in loss of mobility and even amputation of the feet. The best thing that you can do to avoid these complications is avoid blood sugar spikes by keeping blood sugar under control.  Using a combination of lifestyle and dietary choices, it is entirely possible to lower blood sugar levels naturally if you are willing to do the work and make the effort.
