With French doors what are your choices? There are three basic material types used in the making of these doors systems – wood, aluminium and PVC.
Let’s start with wood. This was the original material used in 17th century France when these door systems were invented. Of course this was really the only material available except in upmarket versions which were made form cast iron. Wooden French doors made nowadays are of good quality and usually finished with a high grade stain/paint system that comes with a guarantee. However, sooner or later the paint will degrade and repainting will be necessary. Although a hassle, proper stripping off the existing finish, sanding and repainting can leave the window looking like new again.
Aluminium doors are probably the most expensive but a quality product. White is the standard color but you can choose from hundreds of colors. They will last a life time with the minimum of maintenance required.
PVC French doors also look great. Again, white is the standard colour however there are a number of colors available together with a selection of wood grains. For these doors white seems to be the best choice. PVC also offers low maintenance but will fade a bit after a number of years, however, there is no practical way of smartening them up other than a good cleaning. They are still a quality product and used extensively across the country.
All said and done – which is the best choice? This is a very tough call nowadays. Each type has their own qualities and it is really down to the consumer’s choice.
